First, you need to delete the mail: Tap on an email or mark multiple emails, then tap the Trash Can icon. This will send them to the Trash folder.
To access the Trash folder, from the mail view tap the Account (3 lines) menu, then tap on the Trash folder.
Individually delete or mark multiple and delete emails from here to permanently delete them.
