User Accounts Added to Local Administrators Group After Upgrade

When you upgrade from Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows 98 to Windows 2000, all user accounts are added to the local Administrators group in Windows 2000.

This behavior occurs because Windows NT Setup preserves the full access to local resources that is available to users who log on to a computer running Windows 95 or Windows 98.

To work around this behavior, move any users who you do not want to have local administrator rights from the local Administrators group to the local Users group. To do so, follow these steps:

1. Log on to the computer as the local administrator.
2. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrator Tools, and then click User Manager.
3. In the Groups list, double-click the Administrators.
4. In the Members list, press and hold down the CTRL key, click the user accounts you want to remove, and then click Remove.
5. Click OK.
6. In the Groups list, double-click Users.
7. Click Add, press and hold down the CTRL key, click the user accounts you want to add, and then click Add.
8. Click OK.
9. Click Exit on the User menu to quit User Manager.
