ACT! 2.8 (Symantec Corporation)

Symptoms

While ACT! is running, you may experience one of the following symptoms:

• After you click New on the File menu and select Word 6 Document, ACT! stops responding (hangs).
  
  -or-
• When you use any of the Word 6.0 templates that ACT! installs, Word is started. As Word attempts to convert the template, the following error message appears:
  Compile error in hidden module: MergeACTData.

Resolution

Contact Symantec for an upgraded version of ACT! that is designed to work with Word 98.

Adobe Type Reunion 2.0 (Adobe Systems, Inc.)

Symptoms

When you use Adobe Type Reunion (ATR) version 2.0 with Word 98, you may experience one of the following symptoms:

• When you click the Font menu in Word, nothing happens.
  
  -or-
  
• Adobe Type Reunion draws font controls starting from the bottom of the Font list.

Workaround

To prevent Word from hanging when you use ATR, you must turn on WYSIWYG Font and Style menus. To do this, follow these steps:

1. On the Tools menu, click Preferences, and then click the General tab.
2. Click to select the WYSIWYG Font And Style Menus check box.
3. Click OK.

After Dark 4.03 (Berkeley Systems)

Symptoms

After Dark version 4.03 does not start if Microsoft Office Manager 98 (MOM) is running.

NOTE: Even if Screen Posters is removed from the System folder, After Dark does not function when Microsoft Office Manager 98 is in the Control Panels folder.

Resolution

Turn off Microsoft Office Manager 98.

More Information

When Microsoft Office Manager 98 and After Dark are installed, the commands on the menu bar in Word disappear momentarily and then reappear. The title bar for the Office Assistant goes blank until you move it to a new position.

NOTE: This behavior occurs only in Macintosh Operating System versions 8.0 and 8.1.

Symptoms

When you use CameraMan with Word 98 (or other Office programs), you are unable to move or resize inserted pictures.

CopyPaste 4.1.1 Shareware (Script Software)

Symptoms

If CopyPaste is running, the commands on the Table menu in Word are unavailable after you insert a table. The Table buttons on the toolbar function properly.

NOTE: CopyPaste turns off (disables) the Undo command, although COMMAND+Z functions properly.

Dave 2.0 (Thursby Software Systems)

Symptoms

If Dave 2.0 is installed on your computer and you set up a mail merge in Word 98, the computer stops responding (hangs) with no error messages when you click Merge.

Resolution

DragAnyWindow 4.2.1 (Shareware)

Symptoms

When you use the Solid Drag option in DragAnyWindow 4.2.1 with Word 98, all of the menus in Word become invisible or blank.

Resolution

Upgrade to DragAnyWindow version 4.3.

Look Ma, No Hands version 1.2

Symptoms

This program opens shortcut menus without your having to hold down the CTRL key. It causes the Finders shortcut menu and the Word 98 shortcut menu to appear.

PortDoubler or PowerPort Juggler (Momentum Software)

Symptoms

When you try to open a new or existing document in Word 98 Macintosh edition, your Macintosh may stop responding (hang).

Resolution

Turn off (disable) PortDoubler or PowerPort Juggler, or upgrade to the most current version of Momentum Software.

ScanDirectMenuINIT (Visioneer, Inc.)

Symptoms

If you have the ScanDirectMenuINIT extension from the Visioneer PaperPort Scanner installed, Clip Gallery does not start. You do not receive an error message, but the computer appears to stop responding (hang). This extension ships with Visioneer PaperPort Software Version 5.x and later.

Resolution

Remove ScanDirectMenuINIT from the Macintosh HD:System:Extensions folder.

Sonic Ethernet 10/100 Driver 1.3 (Sonic Systems)

Symptoms

Word or PowerPoint quits with a Type 1 error shortly after you start the program and click the mouse several times.

Symptoms

If you are using STF Fax 3.2.1 with Word 98, you see one of the following symptoms:
