SYMPTOMS

When you upgrade from Internet Explorer version 4.0 or 4.01 to Windows 98 or Microsoft Internet Explorer Service Pack 1 and Internet Explorer is configured to use Medium Security, the "Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" option in Security Settings in Internet Properties is automatically set to "Disable". This may prevent some ActiveX controls from working correctly, or working at all.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, manually configure this option in Security Settings in Internet Properties. To do so, use the following steps:

Internet Explorer 4 and Microsoft Windows 98

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet.
  2. Click the Security tab, click Custom (For Expert Users), and then click Settings.
  3. Under "Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe", click the option you want to use, either Enable, Prompt, or Disable, and then click OK.
  4. Click OK, and then close Control Panel.

Internet Explorer 5

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double- click Internet
  2. On the Security tab, click Custom Level.
  3. Under "Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe," click Enable, Prompt, or Disable.
  4. Click OK, and then click OK again.

APPLIES TO
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01 128-Bit Edition
