DSS80: Fatal Exception 0E When Forcing Standby Mode

SYMPTOMS

When you play digital audio using the Microsoft Digital Sound System 80, the computer may stop responding (hang) and display a Fatal Exception 0E error message on a blue screen.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you choose Standby Mode from the Shut Down Windows dialog box on an Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) computer.

RESOLUTION

To prevent this issue from occurring, quit the program playing digital audio before you select Standby Mode in the Shut Down Windows dialog box.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed in the applies to section of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

This issue only occurs if you click Start, click Shut Down, click Standby Mode, and then click OK. It does not occur when the computer enters Standby Mode automatically according to the ACPI settings.
