SYMPTOMS

When you change the spool folder on the Advanced tab in Print Server properties, you may receive the following error message:
Server spool directory location is invalid

CAUSE

This error message occurs because the print spooler is capable only of creating a child subfolder if the parent folder already exists. If the new folder is off the root of a drive, Spooler can create the folder. If the new spool folder is on a path that requires the spooler to create a folder structure that is longer than the actual spool folder itself, it does not work.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, first create the extended folder structure in Windows Explorer. You can then use Spooler to create the final folder. You can also create the entire folder structure yourself.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

APPLIES TO
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Edition
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
