Cannot Remotely Administer the Remote Installation Service

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to administer the Remote Installation Service (RIS) on a Microsoft Windows 2000 Server-based computer that is a member of a domain, the Remote Install tab may not be present on the Computer Properties page under Active Directory Users and Computers.

If this is the case, you cannot administer RIS on the Windows 2000 Server-based computer.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if both of the following conditions are true:
  • RIS is not installed on a Windows 2000 Server-based domain controller in the domain.
  • The correct MMC Snap-In for administering the service is not installed on the Domain Controller.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, install the Remote Server Administration Tools (AdminPak) on the domain controller, the managing server, or both. For additional information about how to do this, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
