SYMPTOMS

If you attempt to use a template that was created in a previous version of Microsoft Works to create a new Works Database, Works Spreadsheet, or Works Word Processor document in Microsoft Works, you receive the following error message:
Works cannot open filename. The file may be in use by another application, the file format may not be supported by any of the installation converters, or the file may be corrupt.

RESOLUTION

This behavior occurs because you are unable to use a template that was created in a previous version of Works to create a new Works Database or Works Spreadsheet document in Works.

To use a template that was created in a previous version of Works to create a new Works Word Processor document, change the file extension for the Works Word Processor template file from .wpt to .wps. To do this:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Windows Explorer.
  2. Browse to the Works Word Processor template that you want to use.
  3. Right-click the Works Word Processor template file, and then click Rename.
  4. Press the END key, press the BACKSPACE key once, type s, and then press ENTER.
  5. Quit Windows Explorer.

APPLIES TO
