When you move a Remote Installation Services (RIS) server from one Windows 2000 domain to another the computer may appear to join the new domain without any problems, but new clients that attempt to boot to the RIS server in the new domain (after it is authorized in that domain) may receive the following error message during the Client Installation Wizard:
BINL Service could not Read it settings from the Active Directory
Event Type: Warning Event Source: BINLSVC Event Category: None Event ID: 1006 Date: 4/24/2000 Time: 3:39:30 PM User: N/A Computer: XXXXXXXX Description: The BINL service cannot read parameters from the directory service and/or the registry. The following error occurred: 20038. The server will continue to try to read the parameters. Event Type: Error Event Source: BINLSVC Event Category: None Event ID: 1044 Date: 4/24/2000 Time: 3:42:00 PM User: N/A Computer: XXXXXXXXX Description: The BINL service encountered an error while reading its settings from the directory service. CAUSE
When RIS is installed and you run Risetup.exe for the first time, RIS-specific subobjects are created beneath the RIS server's Machine Account Object (MAO). When you move a RIS server from one domain to another, these objects are not automatically re-created in the target domain.
RESOLUTION
To successfully move a RIS server to another domain, use the following steps:
