Works 6: Format Gallery Favorite Is Blank and Cannot Be Deleted

When you open the Format Gallery in Microsoft Works 6 Word Processor or Microsoft Word 2000 (included in Microsoft Works Suite 2001), you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

• One or more of the items in the Add new or favorite formats box may be blank.
• When you highlight a block of text in your document and then click a blank item in the Add new or favorite formats box, the format of the highlighted text may not change.
• When you click a blank item in the Add new or favorite formats box, the Delete button may be unavailable.

This behavior can occur if the Windows registry information about the item in the Add new or favorite formats box is missing or damaged.

To resolve this issue, delete the damaged key from the Windows registry, and then add the format to the list in the Add new or favorite formats box.

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To delete the damaged key from the Windows registry:

1. In the Add new or favorite formats box in the Format Gallery, count the items from the top of the list to the blank item, starting from zero instead of one. Write down this number.
   
   For example, if the blank item is the fifth item in the list, write down the number 4.
2. Quit Works 6 Word Processor or Word 2000.
3. Click Start, and then click Run.
4. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
5. Click the plus sign (+) next to HKEY_CURRENT_USER to expand the branch.
6. Under HKEY_CURRENT_USER, click the plus sign (+) next to Software to expand the branch.
7. Under Software, click the plus sign (+) next to Microsoft to expand the branch.
8. Under Microsoft, click the plus sign (+) next to Works to expand the branch.
9. Under Works, click the plus sign (+) next to 6.0 to expand the branch.
10. Under 6.0, click the plus sign (+) next to Themes to expand the branch.
11. Under Themes, click the plus sign (+) next to CustomStyles to expand the branch.
12. Under CustomStyles, click the folder that matches the number that you wrote down in step 2.
    
    For example, if you wrote down the number four in step 2, click the 00000004 folder.
13. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click Yes.
14. Quit Registry Editor.

You can now start Works 6 Word Processor or Word 2000, and then add the deleted format to the list in the Add new or favorite formats box.
