OL2000: (CW) How to Check for New Mail on MS Mail Postoffice with Outlook

This article describes how to check for new mail on the Microsoft Mail postoffice with Outlook.

When your e-mail server is a Microsoft Mail postoffice or Workgroup postoffice (WGPO) server, Outlook automatically checks for new mail every 10 minutes by default. You can enable immediate notification through network basic input/output system (NetBIOS), but all users must be configured for this feature to work consistently.

A Microsoft Mail postoffice is a passive database. There is no server-based mechanism to notify the user when new messages arrive. Similar to earlier versions of MS Mail for Windows client, Outlook must check for new mail that is waiting on the postoffice for retrieval into the client's mail storage file (.pst file). The polling interval is based on x minutes from the end of the last poll.

To change the polling interval:

1. On the Tools menu, click Services.
2. On the Services tab, click Microsoft Mail.
3. Click Properties, and then click the Delivery tab.
4. By default, the Check for new mail every 10 minutes is set.
5. In the Minutes box, type the number of minutes that you want to set as your polling interval.

It is recommended that your polling interval not be less than five minutes.
