SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade from Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0 to Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional, some programs may not function correctly when you are logged in as a member of the Users group. However, the programs do function correctly for s member of the Power Users or Administrators group.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because permissions for the Users group are more restrictive in Windows 2000.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, you can apply the Compatws.inf security template to mimic the permissions used in Windows NT 4.0. To apply the template, type the following at a command prompt, and then press ENTER:

secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\security\templates\compatws.inf /db compat.sdb

APPLIES TO
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Edition
