Password Expiration Message Is Not Displayed with GPO Logon Script Running in Synchronous Mode

SYMPTOMS

If you enable synchronous processing of logon scripts in a Group Policy object (GPO), or even in a Local Computer policy, the "Your password expires in n days" message is not displayed.

CAUSE

Synchronous processing of login scripts requires Windows to switch to the user desktop, because a script may start a program that requires user input.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, disable synchronous processing of logons scripts.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.
