Lsass Access Violation on Windows 2000 Domain Controllers Performing Name Translation

SYMPTOMS

When a Windows 2000-based domain controller attempts to translate certain name types, Windows may in rare instances display the following error message and then reboot:

The system process Lsass.exe terminated unexpectedly with status code -1073741819. The system will now shut down and restart.

This issue occurs when Lsass experiences an access violation as described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

Although the domain controller may not appear to be doing any work when the problem occurs, the name translation is occurring even though it is not visible to the administrator.

RESOLUTION

STATUS
