B-17 Flying Fortress Causes an Error Message in Windows XP

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install MicroProse B-17 Flying Fortress version 1.0, you may receive the following error message:
B17setup.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
If you view the data that the error report contains, the following error signature information may be listed:

CAUSE

This issue may occur because the sound drivers that are included with B-17 Flying Fortress version 1.0 are not compatible with Windows XP.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue:
  1. Insert the B-17 Flying Fortress CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive, and then double-click My Computer.
  2. Right-click the CD-ROM drive in which the game is currently inserted, and then click Open.
  3. Double-click the Setup icon, and then follow the instructions on the screen to install B-17 Flying Fortress.
  4. After Setup completes, use Windows Explorer to open the drive letter:\Program Files\Microprose\B-17 folder, where drive letter is the drive in which you installed the B-17 Flying Fortress program.
  5. Double-click the game icon in the B-17 folder to start the game.
