You receive an error message that states that the program did not start because ltkrn13n.dll could not be found when you start the Microsoft Works Word Processor program

When you start the Microsoft Works 7.0 or the Microsoft Works 8.0 Word Processor program, you may receive an error message that states that the program did not start because ltkrn13n.dll could not be found.

This issue may occur if Microsoft Works is not installed correctly on your computer.

To resolve this issue, remove and then reinstall Works on your computer. To do this, follow these steps.

Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

Back up the Mswkscal.wcd file

Before you remove Works from you computer, you may want to back up the Mswkscal.wcd file. Microsoft Works Calendar appointments, dates, and events are saved in the Mswkscal.wcd file. To back up the Mswkscal.wcd file, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
2. In the All or part of the file name box, type Mswkscal.wcd.
3. In the Look in list, select your local hard disk, and then click Search.
4. Copy the Mswkscal.wcd file to a different location as a backup. For example, copy the Mswkscal.wcd file to your desktop.

Notes

The following is the default location of the Mswkscal.wcd file: If the Mswkscal.wcd is a hidden file, the file may not appear in the search results listing. To view the Mswkscal.wcd file, follow these steps:

1. Double-click My Computer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
3. Click the View tab.
4. Click to select the Show hidden files and folders check box, and then click OK.

Remove Works from your computer

1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
3. In the list of installed programs, click Microsoft Works X, and then click Add/Remove.
   
   Note In this example, X is the version of Works that you have installed on your computer.
4. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to remove Works from your computer.
5. When you are prompted to restart your computer, click Yes.

Download the Microsoft Windows Installer CleanUp utility

Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility and then run the utility to remove the files and registry settings that make up the Microsoft Windows Installer configuration information for Works.

Run the Microsoft Works Cleanup utility

Copy and then run the appropriate Works Cleanup utility to remove the version of Works that is installed on your computer. Use the following table to determine the appropriate utility to use:


The files are located in the following folder on the Works CD: Note In this folder, CD-ROM drive is the letter of the drive where the Works CD is installed.

To copy the Microsoft Works Cleanup utility from the Works CD to your computer and to run the utility, follow these steps:

1. Right-click the appropriate utility file, and then click Copy.
   
   For example, if Works 7.0 is installed on your computer, right-click Wks7rm.exe.
2. Right-click your desktop, and then click Paste.
3. Remove the Works CD from your CD drive.
   
   Note You can also obtain these files from the Microsoft Download Center. To download a file, visit the following Microsoft Web site, and then type the file name in the Keywords box:
   For example, to download the Microsoft Works 7.0 Cleanup Utility for Windows 98 and Windows Millennium Edition (Me), type Wks7rm.exe in the Keywords box.
4. To run the Microsoft Works Cleanup utility, double-click the utility file that you copied in step 2.

Restart Microsoft Windows in clean-boot mode

A different clean-boot procedure exists for each version of Windows. Select the article that corresponds to your version of Windows, and then follow the instructions to perform a clean-boot procedure on your computer.

Reinstall Works

To reinstall Works, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type Drive:\Setup.exe in the Open box, and then click OK.
   
   Note In this example, Drive is the drive letter of your CD drive.
2. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to reinstall Works.

Restart your computer in Normal mode

To restart your computer in Normal mode, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. Click the General tab, click Normal Startup, and then click OK.
   
   Note Move the Mswkscal.wcd file that you saved in step 4 in the "Back up the Mswkscal.wcd file" section to the following folder:
   C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Works
3. Restart your computer.
