Error message when you try to install the SoftGrid Virtual Application Server: "The installation program was unable to create the Microsoft Internet Information virtual directory required"

SUMMARY

When you try to install the Microsoft SoftGrid Virtual Application Server, you receive the following error message:
The installation program was unable to create the Microsoft Internet Information virtual directory required. The operation completed successfully.
The following event is logged in the Event Viewer System log:

Event ID: 1013
Source: MsiInstaller
Type: Error
Description: Product: SoftGrid Virtual Application Server(TM) – The installation program was unable to create the Microsoft Internet Information Service virtual directory required. The operation complete successfully.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if one of the following conditions is true:
  • Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) is not installed on the local computer.

    Note The SoftGrid Management Web Service requires that IIS is installed on the local computer.
  • The COM+ System Application service is set to Disabled.
  • The Distributed Transaction Coordinator service is set to Disabled.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, the COM+ System Application service must be set to Automatic or Manual during the installation. To change the COM+ System Application service setting, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Services.
  2. Right-click COM+ System Application, and then click Properties.
  3. Under Startup type, select Automatic or select Manual.
  4. Click OK, and then exit Services.
  5. Reinstall SoftGrid.

    Note When the installation is complete, you can reset the COM+ System Application service to Disabled.
The Distributed Transaction Coordinator service must be set to Automatic or Manual during the installation. To change the Distributed Transaction Coordinator service setting, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Services
  2. Right-click Distributed Transaction Coordinator, and then click Properties.
  3. Under Startup type, select Automatic or select Manual.
  4. Click OK, and then exit Services.
  5. Reinstall SoftGrid.

    Note When the installation is complete, you can reset the Distributed Transaction Coordinator service to Disabled.
