Outlook freezes when typing an e-mail message when the Project Web Access add-in is installed

In Microsoft Outlook, when you perform a task such as typing an e-mail message, creating a calendar item, or editing a task, Outlook may freeze.

In order to recover the use of Outlook, you may have to manually end the Outlook.exe process in the Task Manager.

Additionally, you may see a blank Project Server Communication alert message appear at the time that Outlook freezes.

This issue may occur if all of the following conditions are true:

• You are using the Microsoft Project Web Access Outlook Addin.
• You have scheduled automatic updates for assignment information from Microsoft Project Server.
• You are performing another action in Microsoft Outook when the Project Web Access Outlook Addin begins its scheduled import.

To work around this issue, schedule Outlook to update Project Web Access assignments during an inactive time.

To do this, perform the following steps:

1. In Microsoft Outlook, click Tools, and then click Options.
2. Click the Project Web Access tab.
3. Under Assignment Import click the radio button next to Every, and then adjust the schedule for a time when Microsoft Outlook will be running, but you will not be actively performing Outlook tasks.
4. Repeat step 3 for the schedule options under Update Assignments.
5. Click OK.

Alternatively, you can also use the above steps to change the scheduled assignment import and assignment update settings to Manually Only.
