SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • On a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2, you use Group Policy Management Console (GPMC) to connect to a domain controller.

    Note You must have Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) installed if the computer is running Windows 7.
  • You select a Group Policy object (GPO) that you want to view.
  • You select the Settings tab in the right pane to view the settings of the GPO.
  • On the Settings tab, you click the following item:
    Computer Configuration\Windows Setting\Security Settings\Software Restriction Policies
In this scenario, you receive the following error message:
An error has occurred while collecting data for Software Restriction Policies.
This error impacts the following settings:
Software Restriction Policies
Software Restriction Policies/Security Levels
Software Restriction Policies/Additional Rules
The following errors apply to all of the above settings:
An unknown error occurred while data was gathered for this extension. Details: Unable to cast object of type 'System.String[]' to type 'Microsoft.GroupPolicy.Reporting.Extensions.Registry.UnknownType'.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because GPMC reporting uses an incorrect function to retrieve the value of a registry entry that has the multiple string type.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

To apply this hotfix, your computer must be running Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows 7. Additionally, RSAT must be installed if your computer is running Windows 7.
