FIX: You cannot encode and playback certain formats with the Windows Media ASF Filter

SYMPTOMS

This article discusses two hotfixes to the Direct Show Windows Media Advanced Systems Format (ASF) Filter for the following symptoms:

When you try to play content with multiple audio streams or with multiple video streams, and that content is encrypted by using Windows Media Digital Rights Management (WMDRM) in an application, a problem may occur. The problem occurs when you use Windows Media ASF File Reader Filter. When you do this, you may receive the following error message when the file is loaded:
0x80070057 -- One or more arguments are invalid
This worked correctly before you applied Microsoft Knowledge Base article 823738.
When you try to encode 24-bit audio or multichannel audio in an application by using Windows Media ASF File Writer, you may receive the following error message when you try to connect the graph:
0x80040217 -- No combination of intermediate filters could be found to make the connection.

CAUSE

The problems that are described in the "Symptoms" section are caused by the following:

A regression was introduced by 823738.
The Windows Media ASF File Writer did not originally support the following:
- Audio greater than 16 bits per sample
- Multichannel audio

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next release that contains this hotfix.

How to obtain Microsoft support files from online services

Microsoft scanned this file for viruses. Microsoft used the most current virus-detection software that was available on the date that the file was posted. The file is stored on security-enhanced servers that help to prevent any unauthorized changes to the file.

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.
