Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 R2 fix release.
Symptoms
Assume that you use the Report Definition Customization Extension (RDCE) to change a SQL Server 2008 R2 Report Definition Language (RDL) file in Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2. After RDCE processes the file, the file is not changed. You expect the file to be changed by RDCE.
Note RDCE is a feature that enables a Reporting Services extension to dynamically change parts of an RDL file before a report runs. For more information, refer to the “More Information” section.
Cause
The issue occurs because SQL Server 2008 R2 RDL schema is structurally different from the RDL schema in SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2005. This structural difference causes the routines that merge the original RDL and the changed RDL to fail.
Resolution
SQL Server 2008 R2

More Information
In a SQL Server 2005 or SQL Server 2008 RDL file, RDCE can specify a subset of the RDL file to be replaced. This subset can contain the Page, PageHeader, PageFooter, or Body element. The RDL file for SQL Server 2008 R2 introduces ReportSections as a top-level container for these elements. This fix changes the behavior of RDCE to treat any Page, PageHeader, PageFooter, or Body element as ReportSections elements, and triggers a merge together with that element of the RDL file.
