Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.

  • You run the Certificate Export Wizard to export a .pfx certificate file that was imported with the Enable strong private key protection setting enabled.

  • You cancel the Certificate Export Wizard during the "Exporting your private exchange key" stage. To do this, you click Cancel.

In this scenario, a .pfx certificate file that does not have a private key is created, and you receive the following message:

The export was successful.Additionally, when you enable the Delete the private key if the export is successful setting in the Certificate Export Wizard, the private keys for certificates are deleted from the computer.
