Symptoms

Assume that you use Microsoft SQL Server 2014 or Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Always On Availability Groups and have the permissions to grant permissions to other users on an availability group. After the owner of an availability group is removed, you can't grant permissions to another user to log in to that availability group. For example, when you try to grant permissions to a user by executing the GRANT VIEW DEFINITION ON AVAILABILITY GROUP statement, the execution fails, and a dump file is generated.

Resolution

The fix for this issue is included in the following cumulative updates for SQL Server:

Cumulative Update 10 for SQL Server 2014 Service Pack 1

Cumulative Update 9 for SQL Server 2012 SP3

Cumulative Update 16 for SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 2 (SP2)

Note After you install this update, you can't remove an owner of an availability group. Therefore, you can still grant permissions to other users of the availability group.

Each new cumulative update for SQL Server contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous cumulative update. Check out the latest cumulative updates for SQL Server:

Latest cumulative update for SQL Server 2014     Latest cumulative update for SQL Server 2012 SP3
