Bug #: 50003243 (SQL Hotfix)

Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2008 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 fix release.

Symptoms

When you try to run or preview a very large report that contains millions of rows in Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services, you may receive the following error message:

Exception of type System.OutOfMemoryException was thrown.

Or, when you run more than one large report at the same time, and the reports require more memory than is available to the report server, you receive the error message, and one or more reports cannot run.

Cause

SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services introduced additional memory management capabilities to the report server to handle very large reports and large reports that run at the same time. Because of an issue in the report engine memory management code, certain reports may not release memory correctly when the operating system is under high memory load. In this scenario, if you run a very large report or run more than one large report at the same time, an OutOfMemoryException exception occurs.

Resolution

The fix for this issue was first released in Cumulative Update 1. For more information about how to obtain this cumulative update package for SQL Server 2008, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

956717 Cumulative update package 1 for SQL Server 2008Note Because the builds are cumulative, each new fix release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 fix release. We recommend that you consider applying the most recent fix release that contains this hotfix. Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

More Information

The available memory for the report server is decided by the actual physical memory size or by the memory limits that you configured for the server.
