You can disable the dark page background in Dark Mode and keep the page light. You can toggle the Switch Backgrounds button in the ribbon. Upon leaving and returning to any Word for the web document, Word will remember and apply your choice (per unique browser).

The Office theme is the color scheme for your entire Office program, while document themes are more specific (they show up in individual Access or Outlook files). In addition, you can add a pattern to your Office program, by changing the Office Background.

Important: By default, Word and Outlook recolor your documents and e-mails to match the rest of the application when in Black theme. To disable this behavior in Word, navigate to File > Options > General > Personalize your copy of Microsoft Office, then check Never change the document page color.

In Outlook, the black color theme includes dark mode, which provides a black background (instead of white) for the message window. You can switch to a white background for the message window if you prefer.

The dark theme changes the default bright background color in the new Microsoft Edge to a darker color, which is easier on the eyes in low-light environments or if you prefer less bright interfaces. Here's how to activate dark mode:

Click Home > Format Cells dialog launcher, or press Ctrl+Shift+F. On the Fill tab, under Background Color, pick the color you want. To use a pattern with two colors, pick a color in the Pattern Color box, and then pick a pattern in the Pattern Style box.
