Symptoms

Assume that you try to upgrade a Windows RT-based, Windows 8-based, or Windows Server 2012-based computer to Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, or Windows Server 2012 R2. In this situation, the out-of-box experience (OOBE) wizard is not completed, and Windows is not upgraded.Note the OOBE wizard may fail for the following reasons:

  • A driver causes the system to crash.

  • You experience a black screen during the OOBE wizard. Therefore, you cannot interact with the OOBE wizard, and you have to perform a hard reset to the computer.

  • The system is idle in the OOBE state for a long time, and then the system enters a low-power state. However, you cannot resume the computer from the low-power state. Therefore, you have to perform a hard reset to the computer.
