After you install January 3, 2017, update for Excel 2016 (KB3141472), the following Get & Transform features are updated in Excel 2016:

OData Connector: Folding of expanded record operations. This improves the import and refresh performance.

Enhanced Combine Binaries experience: Now supports the ability to combine .xls and .xlsx files.
