Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have System Center Configuration Manager 2007 Service Pack 2 (SP2) client installed in Virtual machines.

  • The virtual machines are managed by Microsoft Enterprise Desktop Virtualization version 2.

In this scenario, the virtual machines cannot perform automatic site assignment or cannot find the closest distribution point to download content based on its current network location.

This issue occurs if the virtual machines are configured to operate in Network Address Translation (NAT) mode.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, download the hotfix package in the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

2516517 Task sequence does not run if it has lots of Install Software steps in System Center Configuration Manager 2007 SP2

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

More Information

This hotfix adds new functionality to Microsoft Enterprise Desktop Virtualization virtual machines that are configured in NAT mode to use host computer location boundaries on an intranet. When a System Center Configuration Manager client detects that the virtual machine is located on an intranet, this hotfix enables roaming support for assigning a site automatically and for locating the closest distribution points. For the administrator to manage the virtual machines and the host computer in the same manner on intranet, the host computer cannot be in NAT mode. However, not all features are supported when you manage the virtual machines by using this mechanism. Some features that require communication with the virtual machines in NAT mode from the System Center Configuration Manager site server are not supported. For example, Remote Control and Client Push are not supported.

NAT mode is supported in an Internet-based client management configuration in System Center Configuration Manager 2007 without installing the hotfix. However, Internet-based client management does not support roaming (Roaming lets clients find the closest distribution points to download content). Clients that are managed over an Internet connection have a fixed Internet-based management point. Clients communicate with the fixed management point when they are on the Internet to find Internet-facing distribution points to download content.
