Note This scenario does not apply when you install Microsoft Office 2010 by using the Click-to-Run technology from Microsoft.

For more information about the Click-to-Run technology, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

982434 An overview of Microsoft Office Click-to-Run for Office 2010

 Consider the following scenario:

  • You install the Microsoft Office 2010 Home and Student suite or the Microsoft Office 2010 Home and Business suite by using a retail DVD or by using a downloaded file.

  • During the installation, you notice that the Include a free trial of Microsoft Office Professional 2010 check box is selected.

In this scenario, the following behavior occurs:

  • If you install Office 2010 Home and Student: The Office 2010 Professional trial versions of Microsoft Outlook 2010, of Microsoft Access 2010, and of Microsoft Publisher 2010 are installed as part of the suite.

  • If you install Office 2010 Home and Business: The Office 2010 Professional trial versions of Microsoft Access 2010 and of Microsoft Publisher 2010 are installed as part of the suite.

To confirm that the Office 2010 Professional trial version is installed, follow these steps:

  1. Open Microsoft Word 2010.

  2. On the File menu, click Help.

  3. Verify that the Office 2010 Professional trial version is displayed, as the following picture shows:

By default, the Include a free trial of Microsoft Office Professional 2010 check box is selected during installation. If you do not click to clear the check box, the additional Professional trial programs are installed.

To remove the Office Professional 2010 trial version that is included with installations of Office Home and Student 2010 and of Office Home and Business 2010, follow these steps:

1.     Open a Microsoft Office program that is not a trial version, such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, or Microsoft OneNote.

2.     Click the File tab.

3.     Click Help.

4.     Under Trial Product, find Microsoft Office Professional 2010, and then click Licensing Operations.

5.     Click Remove Trial.

More Information

The method that is described in the "Resolution" section removes the Office Professional 2010 trial entry from the Backstage view. The method also removes the related entries from the Programs menu on the Start menu.

After you follow the steps in the "Resolution" section, the 2010 trial versions of Outlook, of Access, and of Publisher are listed as Not Available in Office Maintenance mode. However, these steps do not remove the trial version entries in Add or Remove Programs for Office Home and Student 2010 or for Office Home and Business 2010.

To completely remove these trial versions from the computer, you must first temporarily uninstall Office Home and Student 2010 or Office Home and Business 2010. Then, during the reinstallation process, make sure that you click to clear the Include a free trial of Microsoft Office Professional 2010 check box. This check box is located in the installation window that has the Install now and Customize buttons, as the following picture shows:
