Article ID: 2295878 - Last Review: January 17, 2011 - Revision: 6.0 FIX: LOB pages that are allocated in a failed INSERT statement may not be reclaimed after you apply SQL Server 2005 SP3, SQL Server 2005 SP4, SQL Server 2008 SP1 or SQL Server 2008 R2
Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 (SP3), SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 4 (SP4) and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 (SP1) or SQL Server 2008 R2 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2005 SP3, SQL Server 2005 SP4 or SQL Server 2008 SP1 or SQL Server 2008 R2 fix release. On This PageSYMPTOMSConsider the following scenario:
In this scenario, the size of the table still grows. CAUSEThis issue occurs because SQL Server does not reclaim the LOB pages in the system transactions after you receive an error. Therefore, the table size grows. Note LOB pages are allocated in system transactions because of a design change in SQL Server 2005 SP3, SQL Server 2005 SP4 and in SQL Server 2008 SP1 .
