You cannot install an ActiveX control by using a nonadministrative user account that contains non-1252 code page characters in Internet Explorer 8

Consider the following scenario:

• You have a computer that has Windows Internet Explorer 8 installed.
• You log on to this computer by using a non-administrative user account that contains non-1252 code page characters.
• You try to install an ActiveX control in Internet Explorer 8.

In this scenario, the installation fails. Additionally, you receive an error message that resembles the following:

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must have Internet Explorer 8 installed on a computer that is running one of the following operating systems:

Registry information

To use the hotfix in this package, you must create a registry entry. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Exit all instances of Internet Explorer.
2. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
3. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
   
   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl
4. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
5. Type FEATURE_USE_SHORT_NAMES_AX_CDL_KB2310253, and then press ENTER.
6. Click FEATURE_USE_SHORT_NAMES_AX_CDL_KB2310253.
7. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
8. Type iexplore.exe, and then press ENTER.
9. Right-click iexplore.exe, and then click Modify.
10. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
11. Exit Registry Editor.

Note: For Internet Explorer 9 installations, no hotfix is needed. However, the registry key creation is still required to enable the change.

Restart requirement

You may have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

Hotfix replacement information

This hotfix does not replace a previously released hotfix.
