Applies ToWindows Server 2008 R2 Windows 7

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario in a domain environment:

  • You configure an item-level targeting security group filter in Group Policy preferences settings.

  • You apply the Group Policy preference setting to a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows 7.

  • The primary Domain Name System (DNS) suffix of the computer does not match the DNS name of the Active Directory domain. This is known as a disjoint namespace.

In this scenario, the security group filter does not work. Additionally, an event that resembles the following is logged in the Application log:

Cause

The issue occurs because the Group Policy preferences client extension incorrectly retrieves the primary DNS domain suffix when the Group Policy preferences client extension tries to retrieve the DNS domain name. The security group filter does not work because a wrong DNS domain name is used to handle the security group filter.
