Symptoms
Consider the following scenario:
-
You install the Distributed File System (DFS) Namespace service role on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
-
The DFS server is hosted either in a domain-based DFS or in a standalone DFS environment.
-
The DFS environment may include Windows Server 2003-based DFS server along with Windows Server 2008-based or Windows Server 2008 R2-based DFS server, which is typically the case during migration phase of DFS servers.
-
You enable Access-based Enumeration (ABE) for the DFSÂ V1 namespace share. Then, you set specific permissions on the DFS link folders within the share.
-
You use a non-DFS utility to set permissions on intermediate folders. For example, you use Icacls.exe to set permissions.
-
You restart the DFS Namespace service or restart the computer.
In this scenario, the permissions of some DFS folders are incorrectly reset.
Cause
This issue occurs because of a logic error in the DFS Namespace service. This issue occurs when the service sets an Access Control List (ACL) to the DFS folders in a DFS version 1 namespace during the service startup process.
