Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You configure a Wired Group Policy or a Wireless Group Policy so that it uses a network authentication method setting to disable the Validate server certificate option on a Windows Server 2008 R2-based domain controller.

  • You deploy the Group Policy setting to a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista in the same domain as the domain controller.

In this scenario, the Validate server certificate option remains enabled after the computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista is updated by the Group Policy.Because of this problem, users on a client computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista in a network environment who do not rely on certificate validation cannot connect to the protected network.Notes

  • The problem does not occur on client computers that are running Windows 7 and are in the same domain.

  • You must extend the Active Directory schema for the Validate server certificate option if you configure the option in a domain that has Windows Server 2003-based and Windows Server 2008 R2-based domain controllers.

Cause

This problem occurs because of a compatibility issue between computers that run Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows 7 and computers that run Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista.

Resolution

To resolve the problem, install this hotfix on the affected Windows Vista-based or Windows Server 2008-based computers.

  • The files that apply to a specific product, SR_Level (RTM, SPn), and service branch (LDR, GDR) can be identified by examining the file version numbers as shown in the following table.

    Version

    Product

    SR_Level

    Service branch

    6.0.600 0. 20xxx

    Windows Vista

    SP2

    LDR

  • Service Pack 1 is integrated into the release version of Windows Server 2008. Therefore, RTM milestone files apply only to Windows Vista. RTM milestone files have a 6.0.0000.xxxxx version number.

  • The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows Vista and for Windows Server 2008" section. MUM files and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are very important for maintaining the state of the updated components. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
