Applies ToWindows 7 Enterprise Windows 7 Home Basic Windows 7 Home Premium Windows 7 Professional Windows 7 Ultimate Windows 7 Starter

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You run an active antivirus application on a computer that is running Windows 7.

  • You install Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) on the computer.

  • You restart the computer.

In this scenario, you may receive a Stop error message that resembles the following:

STOP: 0x0000007F (0x0000008, parameter2, parameter3, parameter4) UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP

Notes

  • The parameters that are after the "0x0000008" parameter in this Stop error message vary, depending on the configuration of the computer.

  • Not all "0x0000007F" Stop errors are caused by this issue.

Cause

This issue occurs because both the operating system and the antivirus application read from the same files in the startup process of the operating system. Therefore, kernel stack memory may be exhausted, and you receive the Stop error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section. Note After you install an update that updates certain system files on the computer, the operating system tries to verify the digital signatures on all new files.

Windows 7 file information notes
  • The files that apply to a specific product, milestone (RTM, SPn), and service branch (LDR, GDR) can be identified by examining the file version numbers as shown in the following table:

  • GDR service branches contain only those fixes that are widely released to address widespread, extremely important issues. LDR service branches contain hotfixes in addition to widely released fixes.

  • The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows 7" section. MUM and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are extremely important to maintain the state of the updated components. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
