SYMPTOMS

When you run an XQuery query to update the value of an XML column in Microsoft SQL Server 2005, Microsoft SQL Server 2008 or in Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 , the XQuery query does not run. Additionally, you receive an error message that resembles the following:
Error 'There is no function '{urn:schemas-microsoft-com:xml-sql}:variable()'
For example, the following query that updates the value of the TestCol column does not run:
use test
DECLARE @TestIdentity INT
SET @TestIdentity = 100
UPDATE dbo.TestTable
SET TestCol.modify('replace value of (/ROOT/b/@ID)[1] with sql:variable("@TestIdentity")')
FROM dbo.TestTable2 tbl2
INNER JOIN dbo.TestTable tbl
ON  tbl2.aID = tbl.aID
And tbl2.bID = @TestIdentity
Note To work around this issue, you may have to restart the instance of SQL Server 2005 or SQL Server 2008.
