SYMPTOMS

In Windows Vista or in Windows Server 2008, Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) threads might not time out correctly. Therefore, the thread that polls an SNMP agent to call SNMP Management APIs may stop responding. 

CAUSE

This issue occurs because of a logic error because of which only half the SNMP threads are timed out when the SNMP timer thread is woken up.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem that is described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must be running Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) or Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2).
