Registry key information

Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

After you install the hotfix package, follow these steps to enable the hotfix:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0
  3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
  4. Type Gfx, and then press Enter.
  5. Locate and then select the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Gfx
  6. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD (32-bit) Value.
  7. Type CompressImageDPI, and then press Enter.
  8. In the Details pane, right-click CompressImageDPI, and then click Modify.
  9. In the Value data box, type 0, 1, or 2, and then click OK.

Note Specify the following values to indicate the compression level:
    • Specify "0" to compress images to 220 dpi.
    • Specify "1" to compress images to 150 dpi.
    • Specify "2" to compress images to 96 dpi.
If the dpi of the image is lower than the registry key setting, compression is not applied.
  10. Locate and then select the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Gfx
  11. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD (32-bit) Value.
  12. Type Compress8bppIndexedPaletteImages, and then press Enter.
  13. In the Details pane, right-click Compress8bppIndexedPaletteImages, and then click Modify.
  14. In the Value data box, type nonzero positive value, and then click OK.

Note A positive value indicates the minimum width or height above which image compression is enabled. The value zero disables this registry key. For example, if you want to limit compression to images that have a width or height greater than 1000 pixels, then specify "1000." Or, if you specify "1," all images with a width or height greater than 1 pixel (this is basically all images) are compressed.
  15. Exit Registry Editor.
