Symptoms

Consider the following scenario. You use Microsoft Outlook 2010 to open a shared calendar to which you have permissions. Then, you send a meeting request from that shared calendar to a resource mailbox that is configured for Direct Booking. In this scenario, you receive a notification that the resource was successfully booked. However, when you click OK in the warning dialog box, you receive the following error message:

The operation failed.

The meeting is successfully added to the calendar of the resource mailbox. However, the meeting is not added to the shared calendar.

Cause

This issue occurs when the following conditions are true:

  • You schedule a meeting from a shared calendar. For example, as a delegate, you create a meeting on the manager's calendar.

  • The direct booking resource mailbox is the only attendee for the meeting.

This issue occurs because Outlook 2010 does not know that there are no recipients in the meeting request. The meeting should be canceled instead of being submitted.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, apply the following update:

2597011 Description of the Outlook 2010 hotfix package (x64 Outlook-x-none.msp; x86 Outlook-x-none.msp): December 13, 2011

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
