Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1) fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1) fix release.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a report that is created by using Report Builder 1.0 in Microsoft SQL Server 2005.

  • The report contains a chart, and the chart contains a series group.

  • You try to render the report in one of the following released versions of Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services:

    • Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services

    • Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Reporting Services

    • Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Reporting Services

In this scenario, the series group is missing from the report.

Note This issue does not occur if the report is created in Microsoft SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio in SQL Server 2005.

Cause

This issue occurs because of a bug in the upgrade code that is used to upgrade a SQL Server 2005 .rdl file to SQL Server 2008 or later versions of SQL Server. The upgrade code does not handle the series groups correctly, and discards the series groups while SQL Server is performing the upgrade operation.

Workaround

To work around this issue, manually add the missing series groups in the .rdl file. However, after you perform this workaround, you cannot open the .rdl file in Report Builder 1.0.
