Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1) fixes in one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security updates that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1) update release.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a client application that runs a query in Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 or in Microsoft SQL Server 2012.

  • The query uses the FOR XML clause in the PATH mode.

  • The query runs the SET NO_BROWSETABLE ON command to enable the NO_BROWSETABLE setting.

In this scenario, the query does not run. Additionally, you receive the following error message on the client application, and a minidump file is generated in the SQL error log.

Msg 0, Level 11, State 0, Line 0
A severe error occurred on the current command. The results, if any, should be discarded.
Msg 0, Level 20, State 0, Line 0
A severe error occurred on the current command. The results, if any, should be discarded.

Notes

  • A query plan that is used to run the query is not compiled.

  • There are no profiler events for the failed query when you start the SQL Server profile.

  • When this issue occurs, the SQL Server service shuts down intermittently.

Cause

This issue occurs because of an internal failure in the SQL Server algebrizer. This issue occurs when SQL Server tries to add columns that are pulled from one side of a join operator node to the other side of the join operator node. Therefore, an invalid algebrizer tree is created because the columns defined in one side of the join operator node are not visible on the other side of the join operator node.
