Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 R2 fix release.

Symptoms

Assume that you restore a transaction log in Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 or in Microsoft SQL Server 2012. When a database file is removed from a database, the transaction log restore operation takes longer than expected. Additionally, you receive the 3402 system error in SQL Server error log.

Cause

This issue occurs because the close file and reopen file operation occurs on every subsequent transaction log restore attempts, instead of just the transaction log that contains the file removed from the database.
