Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You configure your existing Hotmail email account (@hotmail.com, @msn.com, @live.com, and so on) in Microsoft Outlook. 
  • Later, you rename your existing Hotmail email account to the Outlook.com domain. 
  • You use Microsoft Outlook to connect to the migrated Hotmail email account.
In this scenario, you receive the following credentials prompt:

If you open the Outlook Send/Receive Progress dialog box, you see error messages that resemble the following:
Task '<username>@hotmail.com' reported error (0x8004100A) : 'The synchronization was canceled.'
Task '<username>@hotmail.com: Folder:Inbox Downloading all items.' reported error (0x800CCC0D) : 'The server cannot be found.'

Cause

The Outlook Connector is trying to connect to your Hotmail account. It does not automatically redirect to the Outlook.com account.

Resolution

To connect to the migrated account, follow these steps:
  1. Add the Outlook.com account to your existing Outlook profile. 
  2. Make the Outlook.com account the default email account. 
  3. Compare the contents of the old Hotmail account with the contents of the new Outlook.com account. 
  4. Copy any data that was not migrated from the old Hotmail account to the new Outlook.com account. 
  5. Remove the older Hotmail account from the Outlook profile.

Specifically, follow the steps that are described in one of the following sections, depending on your version of Outlook.

Outlook 2010

Add the new Outlook.com account
  1. In Outlook, click Info on the File menu, and then click Add Account.
  2. In the Add New Account dialog box, click Manually configure server settings or additional server types, and then click Next.
  3. Click Other, click to select Microsoft Outlook Hotmail Connector, and then click Next.
  4. In the Windows Live Hotmail Settings dialog box, type your name, @Outlook.com email address, and password, and then click OK.
  5. When the confirmation dialog box appears, click Finish.
Prepare to remove the Hotmail account
  1. In Outlook, click Info on the File menu, and then click Account Settings.
  2. Click Account Settings.
  3. If the old Hotmail account is configured as the default account, select the @Outlook.com email account, and then click Set as Default.
Remove the Hotmail account
After you copy any items that were not synchronized to the new Outlook.com account, you can remove the old Hotmail account. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. In Outlook, click Info on the File menu, and then click Account Settings.
  2. In the Account Settings dialog box, select the old Hotmail account, and then click Remove.

Outlook 2007 and Outlook 2003

Add the new Outlook.com account
  1. In Outlook, click the Outlook Connector menu, and then click Add a New Account.
  2. In the Windows Live Hotmail Settings dialog box, type your name, email address, and password, and then click OK.
  3. When the Add E-mail Account dialog box appears, click OK, and then restart Outlook.
Remove the Hotmail account
After you start Outlook, make that all your Outlook.com email is displayed. Then, remove the Hotmail account. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. In Outlook 2003, click E-Mail Accounts on the Tools menu, and then click to select the View or change existing e-mail accounts option.

    Note In Outlook 2007, click Account Settings on the Tools menu. 
  2. If the old Hotmail account is configured as the default account, click to select the Outlook.com account, and then click Set as Default.
  3. Click to select the old Hotmail account, and then click Remove.
  4. Click Finish or Close.
