Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • A Cluster Shared Volume (CSV) is enabled on a Windows Server 2008 R2-based multi-node failover cluster.
  • The Hyper-V 2.0 role is installed on the failover cluster.
  • The CSV has very little available space and does not have a shadow copy storage area (diff area).
  • You schedule a backup job for the CSV. To do this, you create a volume snapshot of the CSV by using the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).

In this scenario, the disk on the failover cluster that has the most available space (other than the CSV) is selected to host a shadow copy storage area.

Note The expected behavior in this scenario is that the backup job fails continuously because a shadow copy storage area is created on the CSV when you create the volume snapshot.

Cause

This issue occurs because a shadow copy storage area is not defined for the CSV.
