Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 fix release.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You rename the sa login for an instance of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 or Microsoft SQL Server 2012.

  • You create a SQL Server Utility Control Point (UCP) that manages the instance of SQL Server.

  • You try to perform a product update operation for the instance of SQL Server.

In this scenario, the update operation fails. Additionally, you receive the following error messages:

Error 1
Date Time spid # Database 'master' is upgrading script 'upgrade_ucp_cmdw.sql' from level 0 to level 2.
Date Time spid # ------------------------------------------------
Date Time spid # Starting execution of PRE_UPGRADE_UCP_CMDW.SQL
Date Time spid # ------------------------------------------------

Error 2
Date Time spid # SQLServerAgent is not currently running so it cannot be notified of this action.
Date Time spid # Error: 515, Severity: 16, State: 2.
Date Time spid # Cannot insert the value NULL into column 'owner_sid', table 'msdb.dbo.sysjobs'; column does not allow nulls. INSERT fails.
Date Time spid # Error: 912, Severity: 21, State: 2.
Date Time spid # Script level upgrade for database 'master' failed because upgrade step 'upgrade_ucp_cmdw.sql' encountered error 515, state 2, severity 16. This is a serious error condition which might interfere with regular operation and the database will be taken offline. If the error happened during upgrade of the 'master' database, it will prevent the entire SQL Server instance from starting. Examine the previous errorlog entries for errors, take the appropriate corrective actions and re-start the database so that the script upgrade steps run to completion.
Date Time spid # Error: 3417, Severity: 21, State: 3.
Date Time spid # Cannot recover the master database. SQL Server is unable to run. Restore master from a full backup, repair it, or rebuild it. For more information about how to rebuild the master database, see SQL Server Books Online.

Additionally, you can no longer start the instance of SQL Server after this issue occurs.
