Summary

The Microsoft Office Configuration Analyzer Tool (OffCAT) provides a detailed report of your installed Office programs. This report includes many parameters about your Office program configuration. It also highlights known problems that are found when OffCAT scans your computer. For any problems that are listed in the report, you are provided a link to a public-facing article (usually a Microsoft Knowledge Base article) about each problem so that you can read about possible fixes. If you are a Helpdesk professional, you can also save the report to a file so that it can be viewed in the Office Configuration Analyzer Tool on another client on which the tool is installed.

Note This article is updated to include new information about OffCAT version 1.2.0.1.

  • Required temporary change needed for an OffCAT v1.2 program update

The OffCAT team is publishing an updated version of OffCAT in or around the week of April 7, 2014. Due to a bug in OffCAT v1.2, you will need to make a temporary change in your OffCAT settings to have OffCAT automatically detect this program update.

NOTE If you do not make this change to your OffCAT v1.2 configuration you will not be able to use the automatic updating feature in OffCAT and you will also not be able to update your detection rules.

Please use the following steps to make this temporary change to your OffCAT settings.
    1. Start OffCAT.
    2. In the left panel, click OFFCAT UPDATES.
    3. If enabled, click to clear the 'When updated rule files are available, install without prompting' option. This setting is shown in the following figure.

    4. Close OffCAT if you are not going to scan an Office program.
    5. The next time you start OffCAT after the program update has been released you will be prompted to install the update. Update your installation of OffCAT when prompted.

After OffCAT has been updated, the 'When updated rule files are available, install without prompting' option will be re-enabled (which is the default setting in OffCAT).

  • Office 2003 programs do not show up on the Scan page in OffCAT v1.2

  • What are some of the new features in OffCAT v1.2?

In addition to the features that are available in OffCAT v1.0 and v1.1, the following new features and updates are included in OffCAT v1.2.
    • Office Alerts section added to the Scan page

On the Scan page on which you select your Office program to scan, a section of the page features "Office Alerts." These are general information alerts to keep you informed about issues that affect a large segment of the Office user base.
    • KMS Activation troubleshooting tools

Use this feature to troubleshoot activation problems on Office clients that are using KMS activation (volume license clients only).
    • New appearance for the View Report page

In addition to the new "tile" design and renamed reports, the most useful feature that is added to the View Report page is the symptoms-based issues list. The All Issues and Critical Issues tabs default to a view that is organized by symptoms. You can filter the issues list by one or more symptoms by using the Filter control.
    • Export to .zip

If you are reviewing OffCAT scans that are generated by other users, you might want those users to use this new export option because their OffCAT results may contain errors or warnings for issues that are found by CalCheck. These errors and warnings refer you to the CalCheck.log file. You will have this log file only if the other users export their OffCAT report by using the .zip option.
    • Drag-and-drop support to import scans

When you drop the scan (.xml) file onto the View or Import Scans screen, the scan is automatically processed, and the results are displayed in the View Report screen. The scan is also added to the existing list of scans.

  • OffCAT crashes immediately after it starts

We are aware of one reproducible scenario in which OffCAT crashes. This problem occurs when you start OffCAT.exe but the supporting .dll files are not in the same folder as OffCAT.exe. If you download OffCAT.zip from the Microsoft Download Center, make sure that you extract all the files in the .zip file to the same folder. The following figure displays the list of files that are found in the OffCAT.zip file.

  • Is OffCAT compatible with Outlook 2003?

Yes. OffCAT is compatible with Outlook 2003, but only for offline scans.
  • Can OffCAT be scripted to run on a client on which OffCAT is not installed?

Yes. The files that are installed by the OffCAT.msi file include OffCATcmd.exe. This is a command-line version of OffCAT. For more information, see the "Generating a Scan using the Command-line version of OffCAT" section of the ReadMe_OffCATv1.2.docx file.
  • OCAT is not uninstalled when you install OffCAT

To work around this problem, manually uninstall OCAT. This is because OCAT is an earlier program that has been replaced by OffCat. To uninstall OCAT, use the Programs and Features item in Control Panel.
  • "Unhandled exception" error when you run a scan if you reference a network drive for "Default location for scans"

OffCAT v1.2 includes a new feature that lets you configure the default location in which scan files are saved. This option is configured through the Default location for scans setting on the Options page in OffCAT v1.2. If you specify a folder location that is not on a local drive, OffCAT generates an "Unhandled exception" error message that references the path that you specified. This error message resembles the following:

Access to the path 'Z:\UIErrors.txt' is denied
  • Which Office programs can be scanned by OffCAT?

OffCAT v1.2 can scan the following Office programs and functions:
    • Access
    • Excel
    • InfoPath
    • OneNote
    • Outlook
    • PowerPoint
    • Publisher
    • Visio
    • Word
    • KMS client activation
  • Why does selecting the "All" option for a scan generates separate scan files for each Office program?

If you select the "All" option for a scan by using OffCAT v1.2, separate scan files are created for each Office program that is installed for the version of Office that you select for the scan. This behavior is by design. This is because the OffCAT rules are program-specific. For example, if you are looking at a scan for Microsoft Office PowerPoint, you will see only the detected issues that are relevant to PowerPoint. This behavior lets you focus on the Office programs that might be experiencing the most issues without having to read a large scan report for all Office programs at one time.
  • When I select the "All" option for a scan, Microsoft Outlook is not listed as one of the Office programs to scan.

If you have more than one version of Outlook installed on your computer, the "All" option does not let you scan Outlook together with the other Office programs. This situation can occur, for example, if you have Office 2010 installed together with a click-to-run version of Office 2013. In this case, run a separate scan for Outlook only.
  • Can I use the "All" option if I am using the command-line version of OffCAT (OffCATcmd.exe)?

No. If you have to scan all the installed Office programs, create a script that scans each program separately by using a looping procedure in the script. After you do this, you only have to reference a different program for the -cfg switch each time through the loop.
