Symptoms

Assume that you install the File Server Resource Manager (FSRM) role on a computer that is running Windows Server 2012. You try to eject a USB hard disk drive by clicking "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" in the notification area. In this situation, the USB hard disk drive cannot be safely ejected, and you receive an error message that resembles the following:

This device is currently in use. Close any programs or windows that might be using the device, and then try again.

Note This issue also occurs on other removable media.

Cause

This issue occurs because the FSRM service (SrmSvc) holds the device handle.
