Unable to install 32-bit version of Windows 8 on Surface Pro

Symptoms

When attempting to install 32-bit version of Windows 8 on a Surface Pro, you may encounter the following symptoms:
  • USB drive or DVD drive that contains the 32-bit version of Windows 8 operating system source files, does not boot.
  • After applying 32-bit version of Windows 8 image to Surface Pro, the system boots to the BIOS configuration screen.

Cause

The Surface Pro only supports 64-bit version of Windows 8 Enterprise and 64-bit version of Windows 8 Professional operating systems. 

Resolution

Install a supported operating system such as 64-bit version of Windows 8 Enterprise and 64-bit version of Windows 8 Professional.
