Symptoms
Assume that x2APIC mode and Intel Virtualization Technology for Directed I/O (VT-d) are enabled in the BIOS on a computer that is running an x64-based version of Windows 8. When you resume the computer from sleep mode (system power state S3), the computer freezes.
Note When you resume the computer from sleep mode, corruption occurs on the lowest 1 MB of physical memory.
Cause
This issue occurs because the interrupt controller is not initialized before the EtwWrite function is called.
Resolution
Hotfix information
A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

To apply this hotfix, you must be running an x64-based version of Windows 8.

You must restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows 8" section. MUM and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are extremely important to maintain the state of the updated components. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.

Workaround
To work around the issue, disable VT-d.
Note When VT-d is disabled, Windows cannot enable x2APIC mode.
Status
