Symptoms

Assume that an email message is sent from an empty sender address to an environment that has Update Rollup 1 for Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 3 (SP3) installed. At least one transport rule is configured in the organization. In this situation, the email message is not delivered successfully, and the EdgeTransport.exe process crashes on the Hub Transport server. Additionally, the following events are logged in the Application log:

Cause

This issue occurs because an object reference is not set to an instance of an object when the email message is processed by the transport rule. Therefore, an exception is thrown.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, install the following update rollup:

2866475 Description of Update Rollup 2 for Exchange Server 2010 SP3
Note The email message remains in the poison queue. You can resubmit the message after you apply this update rollup.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
